2016 Honda CR-Z vs 2016 Chevy Volt

2016 Honda CR-Z vs 2016 Chevy Volt

Finding direct competitors for the Honda CR-Z is nearly impossible, because it is in a league all of its own. While there are plenty of luxury vehicles trying to mix power and hybrid efficiency together, the CR-Z is just about the only one trying to do it in the affordable market. So we branch out a bit to compare it to somewhat-similar vehicles that shoppers might also be looking at, and today we decided to compare the 2016 Honda CR-Z vs 2016 Chevy Volt to see how our sporty hybrid coupe measures up.

Advantages of the 2016 Honda CR-Z

The problem with this comparison is that the CR-Z is a hybrid sports car, while the Volt is a sporty plug-in hybrid. Comparing a plug-in to a standard hybrid is difficult, as the plug-in generally has the ability to switch into an all-electric mode. The first row of the table above shows that the Chevy Volt blows the CR-Z out of the water in terms of efficiency in its all electric mode, as it operates at a 2.4 l/100km equivalent. But when the Volt is operating in pure hybrid mode, the Honda manages to achieve a much closer highway fuel efficiency of just 0.4 l/100km less than the Chevy.

Power is another area that makes the comparison difficult, as the Volt doesn’t operate under a standard horsepower all the time. When in straight hybrid mode, it does achieve 149 horsepower, which is 19 more than the CR-Z. The Honda CR-Z, however, happens to weigh a whopping 843 lbs. less than the Chevy Volt, severely crippling that advantage for the plug-in hybrid, if not wiping it out entirely.

The one area that isn’t difficult to compare is space, which is an area that the 2-seat Honda hatchback dominates its competitor by offering nearly 15 cubic feet more space for cargo than the 4-seat Chevy sedan.
