The Wheaton family is well known throughout the automotive industry in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan, but is also widely recognized in Edmonton, Alberta for community involvement. “[Don Go Sr.] always said that out of every eight-hour work day, one hour was always to be spent giving back to the community,” says Don A. Go Jr. “He passed on to our generation to carry on that support and we are passing that on to the next generation.”
Wheaton Honda (previously Millwoods Honda) has supported The Carbon Farmer, which was a company recently featured on Dragon’s Den. This included some of our employees at one point coming to plant the trees ourselves.
This part of the business works by taking advantage of the carbon credits created by the trees planted. “We plant trees, which create habitat,” says Brad. “And in comparison to the life cycle of tilling the land, we are creating carbon storage as well, which we can sell as carbon credits.”
Throughout our involvement with the Carbon Famer initiative, Wheaton Honda has contributed:
- the planting and care of 1,478 trees;
- the creation of 9,328 square meters of forest;
- the offseting of 507,354 kilograms of CO2eq emissions; and
- reducing emissions equivalent to the burning of 214,976 litres of gasoline
Wheaton Honda is also a sponsor for the Nor’Wester Athletic Association’s U19 Boys Rugby program here in Edmonton, providing funds that go toward purchasing jerseys, practice equipment and player development opportunities for these young athletes. Last season, they were our City Finalists, and this year they have their sights set on becoming Provincial Champions!
The entire Go Group is also a proud sponsor of the United Way, hosting a number of fundraisers throughout the year and including a matching program for any employee contributions.
