We’ve seen a number of stories in the news lately about customers in Edmonton buying used vehicles online through Kijiji or other private listings, or from privately owned “curbside” lots. They have encountered a number of problems, from vehicles that are not road-worthy to customers being lured into unsafe situations.
In the interest of full disclosure, we chatted with our Used Vehicle Managers Ian Clark and Ian Rae to find out why customers should consider buying used from a franchised dealership, rather than putting themselves at risk to get a great deal on their new-to-them vehicle.
1. AMVIC ‘has your back.’
Did you know that AMVIC (which stands for Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council) can only protect customers who buy from registered dealerships? Alberta’s Consumer Protection laws only apply to sales between consumers and licensed businesses.
“AMVIC has the authority to investigate complaints involving about automotive businesses and registered salespeople. AMVIC does not have the authority to investigate or become involved in issues arising from private sales.” (Full quote here.)
This means that when you make a deal with a non-registered seller, you are at your own risk if everything isn’t as promised.
Why does AMVIC only protect customers against registered dealerships? Franchised and registered dealerships are fully bonded, and must maintain the high standard of professional conduct that AMVIC ensures that we follow. This gives you complete confidence that we are not re-selling stolen vehicles and all of our vehicles are completely roadworthy and guaranteed free of any liens. If they aren’t, we are held legally accountable according to government guidelines.
2. We carry a wide variety of vehicles that are Honda Certified.
Since the Civic has been the best-selling car in Canada for 15 years running, that means that any old Civic should do the job, right? Not quite.
Honda Canada doesn’t throw their name around lightly, and not all used Honda vehicles are certified. They are only available from qualified franchised Honda dealerships, and have to pass through a very specific Honda Canada mandated inspection and reconditioning process by factory-trained technicians – this cannot be provided by curbside or privately owned lots.
Honda Certified vehicles come with an extra year of powertrain warranty, have gone through a 100-point mechanical and appearance inspection by approved technicians, and come with a 7 day or 1000 km exchange privilege, and complimentary CarProof and available service history report.
3. We’ll put our name behind it too.
The Gos have been serving Edmontonians for over 50 years, and we’re proud to be trusted name in the community. Our Go guarantee includes our own 3 month/5000 km warranty on your vehicle, a full tank of gas, and we make sure that on top of adhering to all legal and manufacturer standards, that we uphold our own high standards.
It is our hope that you come back to maintain your Honda Service plan with us, and if for whatever reason you haven’t had the best experience, come talk to us – our friendly and knowledgeable staff will do whatever we can to make it right. We’ve got strong ties to the community, and unlike individual sellers or curbside lots that can pack up and disappear at any moment, we’ll be here for a long time to come.
