2015 Honda CR-V vs. 2015 Mazda CX-5

The rapidly growing and incredibly popular crossover segment has led to increased levels of competition, which is great news for you as consumers. At the top of the crossover class, you’ll almost certainly find nameplates like the Honda CR-V and the Mazda CX-5. While these two crossovers have been vying for the attention of car buyers for years, it’s important to know that the Honda CR-V underwent a pretty substantial refresh for the 2015 model year. With a multitude of improvements, the 2015 Honda CR-V vs. 2015 Mazda CX-5 comparison looks much different than it did in the previous model year. Let’s take a look at how these "small" crossovers match up with one another.

For comparison’s sake, we’ll take a look at the all-wheel drive base models, which start at similar price points.

Drivers focusing on finding the best combination of power and efficiency will want to turn to the 2015 Honda CR-V. While the CX-5 was previously a top-of-class option, the CR-V reclaimed the crown for the 2015 model year. The 2.4-litre i-VTEC engine under the hood of the CR-V kicks out 185 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. Similarly, the Mazda CX-5’s four-cylinder engine generates 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque.

While power and torque are very comparable, the Honda CR-V’s improved efficiency ratings catapulted it past the CX-5. According to the EPA, the Honda CR-V with AWD will return approximately 7.1L/ 100 km on the highway and 9.0L/100 km in the city. By comparison, the 2015 Mazda CX-5 is estimated to achieve 7.8L/100 km on the highway and 9.8L/100 km in the city.

Although the Honda CR-V’s edge over the Mazda CX-5 in the efficiency category is important, there are other benefits to choosing Honda’s refreshed crossover. For instance, the CR-V sports more trunk space, a standard LCD display, and convenient sliding armrests, among other benefits.

Of course, the best way to determine which crossover is right for you is to get behind the wheel for a test drive. Do your own 2015 Honda CR-V vs. 2015 Mazda CX-5 and find out why Honda’s refreshed crossover is Motor Trend's SUV of the Year.
