Introducing the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell Vehicle
It seems like, as far as technology is concerned, if we’re not talking about safety features we’re probably talking about fuel economy enhancements. All different kinds of alternative fuel sources are being researched and developed each year, and the technologies continue to get better and better. For instance, Honda has gone on record stating that there will be a completely reengineered 2017 Honda Accord Hybrid model going on sale later this spring, and a brand-new, yet-unnamed Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle releasing for the 2018 model year.
So that covers the hybrid electric classifications, but what about the other big-time alternative fuel: fuel cell technology? Introducing the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell Vehicle, which will make its debut at the New York International Auto Show. The Clarity Fuel Cell has been around for a while elsewhere, but the vehicle’s next generation is coming to North America, starting with the U.S., and we can’t wait to see its progress.
“We’re pleased to be able to offer this first look at the U.S. version of the Clarity Fuel Cell sedan in advance of its market arrival later this year. The Clarity Fuel Cell is the first in an expanding portfolio of advanced electrified vehicles from Honda that will create a new pillar in our product lineup.”
– John Mendel, Executive Vice President of the Automobile Division, American Honda Motor Co.
What is the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell Vehicle?
Honda originally introduced the FCX Clarity in 2006 as a concept vehicle, and eventually moved it into production in 2008. It was the manufacturer’s first stab at fuel cell technology, and they’ve started to perfect it over time. Now, Honda believes it has the right formula, and will put it to the test with the brand new Honda Clarity FCV. We don’t know if the vehicle will make it to Canada, but we’re excited by the prospect.

Some of the details that have already been announced include best-in-class power and an EPA-estimated driving range of over 300 miles, which is incredible. The vehicle will be able to sit up to five and offer regular features like Honda Sensing, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The new Clarity will be on display at the New York International Auto Show, so perhaps we will have more information after its official North American Debut. Until then, be sure to stay tuned to the Wheaton Honda blog.
