What happened at the Red Bull GRC opening weekend?
A few weeks ago we gave you the inside scoop on Honda entering the 2016 Civic Coupe into the Red Bull Global Rallycross Series, and gave you a first look at the livery it would sport throughout the series. Well, last weekend saw the kickoff of the event with two days of racing. This only begs one question, what happened at the Red Bull GRC opening weekend? There were two Honda drivers in the event, and while neither took home the prize they both had a great showing.

Sebastian Eriksson Snags Podium Finish
There were two races in Phoenix this weekend, with round one taking place on Saturday and round two on Sunday. Day one marked a slow start for Team Honda, with Joni Wiman landing a 6th place finish and Sebastian Eriksson finishing in 9th in the day’s finals. Before that, they each took second place to make it to the finals. But it was on day two where things really started looking up.
The course – Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park – stretches only 0.929 miles but has 12 turns within the course. Eriksson took second and Wiman took third, landing them in the finals for the second day in the row. After Wiman experienced some mechanical damage, it was up to Eriksson to represent the team, and he did so by bringing the Civic Coupe onto the podium with a third-place finish. It marked the first time Honda achieved a podium finish in the Red Bull GRC, but the future looks bright for many more finishes to follow.
“I am really happy to give Honda its first podium in Red Bull GRC. The team worked through the night fixing the car after the damage from Saturday’s race. It was an absolute team effort to get this finish, but we’re not satisfied. Dallas will be a great track for us and the Red Bull Civic.”
– Sebastian Eriksson, #93, Red Bull Honda OMSE
The next GRC event takes place on June 4th, which will be the third of twelve total rounds. We wish Eriksson, Wiman and the whole Red Bull Honda OMSE team luck going in, and we’ll keep you updated with any good news!
