2016 Labour Day Events Edmonton AB
In just a couple of weeks we’ll be celebrating a holiday that often gets overlooked, but is just as important as most of the other annual holidays: Labour Day. More than one-hundred years ago, Canadian labour unions across the country banded together in an effort to stand up for a shorter work week. Those people were criminalized for wanting to be treated fairly, so the rest of the country stood up in support and fought for those people, and a shorter work week was granted. That was the birth of the holiday in question, which occurs the first Monday of September every year, so we’ve come up with some things to do in Edmonton AB for 2016 Labour Day.
Annual Labour Day Barbeque
For the past 27 years, the Edmonton and District Labour Council has been hosting a barbeque for the Edmonton area. This year, the BBQ will take place at Giovanni Caboto Park on the 5th of September from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Be sure to come with an empty stomach and ready to play some games and have fun with the whole family!
Symphony Under the Sky
One of the most incredible annual concerts of the year takes place each year right around Labour Day, and that’s the Symphony Under the Sky. With tickets ranging from $25 to $135 depending on age and where you want to sit, with some young ones even getting in for free, it’s a very affordable concert filled with fantastic classical music performed by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. This year the event takes place from August 25th to the 28th, so don’t miss it!
Speaking of fantastic concerts, if classical music isn’t your style then you might be happy to hear that the SONiC BOOM Festival hosted by SONiC 102.9 will be returning on September 3rd and 4th, starting at 11:30 a.m. each day, at Borden Park in Edmonton. With huge musical performers like Twenty One Pilots and the Lumineers, this will be a fantastic weekend packed with outstanding music and tons of fun.
No matter what you decide to do with your Labour Day or the days leading to it, we simply hope you enjoy your extra time off on one of the last weekends of summer.
