How's This Work? Turbocharger

What is a turbocharged engine?

Last month saw the return of the How’s This Work articles, but we’ve decided, starting this month, that we’ll only be doing one of these blogs per month, and now’s the time for November’s! So today, we’re going to take a glance at the turbocharged engine to give you a better idea of exactly what it is, now that so many of our models come equipped with one – including the 2018 Honda Civic Type R.

How does a turbocharger work?

Essentially, a turbocharger is an extra feature or technology added to your engine bay to make your engine far superior than it might be without it. What a turbocharged engine essentially delivers to its drivers is more efficiency at a given horsepower. So, let’s say for instance that you have a regular engine with 150 horsepower at 10 l/100km. If you were to turbocharge that engine, even if the horsepower were to stay at 150 HP, that fuel efficiency would lower thanks to the turbocharger.

However, another side effect of a turbocharger is that it delivers more power as well, giving any vehicle a bit of a boost. That means your vehicle is now more powerful and fuel efficient, which is a difficult thing to do, and next to impossible without adding a turbocharger. If you’d like to know more about the technical side of a turbocharged engine, watch the video below as it gives you a deeper insight.
