How's This Work? Traffic Sign Recognition

How does Traffic Sign Recognition work?

For this month’s How’s This Work article, we wanted to cover the newest addition to the Honda Sensing Safety Suite. Making its first appearance as part of the suite in the 2018 Honda Accord Sedan, it’s a great addition that will enhance your confidence that much more each time you get behind the wheel. It’s not as huge or game-changing as features like the Collision Mitigation Braking System, but it’s a great tool that will further assist you in avoiding collisions. The feature is called Traffic Sign Recognition, and it gives your Honda vehicle the ability to recognize and display traffic signs just in case your eyes didn’t quite catch them.

This new system utilizes radars and cameras to analyze road signs as you pass them by, and if the signs register they’ll be displayed in the driver information interface inside the instrument cluster. If your vehicle is equipped with the head-up display system, then it will also be displayed in your HUD. So, for instance, if you turn onto a road and there is a 50 mph sign just as you do, but you don’t catch it… your Honda vehicle should, and you’ll see it displayed and be able to drive accordingly.

Remember that systems like this do not necessarily work 100% of the time. They are not a replacement for your attentiveness and best judgment. Always pay attention to road signs if you’re able and react accordingly!
