Which Honda vehicle made it on the 2019 Wards’ 10 Best Engines list?

For the twenty-fifth year, major automotive publication WardsAuto has created its list of the 10 Best Engines of the year. This year the list wasn’t dominated by any specific type of engine or vehicle, and the field was actually quite diverse, featuring three different pickup trucks, a turbocharged 4-cylinder, a turbocharged V6, the V8 engine of a muscle car, and four electrified powertrains. Among the crop this year was one particular Honda engine, which has us pretty excited, so we thought we’d take a closer look at the list.

Winning an award period is an exciting thing, but this one has us particularly excited. The engine that made the list is the 2.0L DOHC Atkinson i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine that powers the 2019 Honda Accord Hybrid. Again, that in and of itself should be exciting, but making this even more exciting is that it’s the only non-luxury hybrid powertrain on the list. No Toyota Prius. No Hyundai Niro. No other value-brand hybrids at all!

What engines made the list?

The nature of the list is that these are the 10 Best Engines on the market of the year. They’re not numbered or ordered in any fashion, they’re just the 10 Best. The winning engines are as follows:

  • The 2019 Honda Accord Hybrid’s 4-cylinder Hybrid Powertrain
  • The 2019 BMW X5’s turbocharged I-6
  • The 2019 Chevy Silverado’s V8 with DFM
  • The 2019 Ford Mustang GT Bullitt’s V8
  • The 2019 Hyundai Nexo’s Fuel Cell Electric Propulsion System
  • The 2019 Hyundai Kona EV’s Propulsion System
  • The 2019 Infiniti QX50’s VC-Turbo 4-cylinder
  • The 2019 Lexus UX 250h 4-cylinder Hybrid Powertrain
  • The 2019 RAM 1500’s eTorque V6

After two months of pouring over 34 different engines and electric propulsion systems, this is the list the WardsAuto Editors came to, and we couldn’t be prouder of the 2019 Accord Hybrid!
