The 2024 Honda Passport is a midsize crossover SUV mechanically related to its bigger brother in the Honda SUV lineup but pursues a different direction. The Passport doesn’t have a third-row seat, so five is the maximum number of occupants. However, instead of the extra passenger capacity third-row seats deliver, the 2024 Passport offers increased ride height and the extra off-road capability that delivers for those who like to venture well beyond the urban confines of Sherwood Park and the wider Edmonton area.
Although it stays clear of looking too aggressive, it does wear a more rugged exterior than its bigger brother, which leaves you in no doubt about its extra off-road capability. The mid-range trim level adds an extra element of rugged styling, but the Passport never gets polarizing in any of its available guises.
There are now four different trim levels in the 2024 Honda Passport lineup. The range starts with the entry-level Passport Sport; the mid-range model of last year is next and is the impressively stylish Trailsport. The next most luxurious version of the midsize Honda is the previously range-topping Passport Touring, while the new range-topper is called the Black Edition. The interior is spacious and comfortable. The supportive seats have plenty of legroom, and there’s still plenty of room for cargo.
While plenty of the Honda’s midsize crossover rivals are adopting small-displacement turbo engines that have to work hard with a full complement of passengers and cargo onboard, the 2024 Honda Passport goes with something more traditionally substantial. All three models in the current range get the same engine, a 3.5-litre V-6 that puts out 280 horsepower and 262 lb.-ft. of torque.
The displacement and power of the Passport are only part of the story, though. Every model also gets Honda’s Intelligent Variable Torque Management (i-VTM4) AWD system as part of the standard specification, and the power gets to all four wheels through a standard 9-speed automatic transmission with Grade Logic Control. And if you want to tow with the Passport, the maximum towing capacity when properly specified is 2,268 kg (5,000 pounds).
All versions of the 2024 Honda Passport get an impressive standard specification, and safety is an area where the midsize Honda is particularly impressive. Standard active safety features include Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Collision Mitigation Braking System, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Road Departure Mitigation, Hill Start Assist, Tire Pressure Monitoring System with tire fill assist, Trailer Stability Assist, and Vehicle Stability Assist with Traction Control.
The Sport Touring is exceptionally well-equipped with a standard hands-free power liftgate, rain-sensing wipers, leather upholstery, heated second-row seats, heated and ventilated front seats, wireless device charging, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth, navigation, and Apple CarPlay & Android Auto connectivity.
The 2024 Honda Passport is a midsize crossover SUV that concentrates on its strengths and doesn’t attempt to be something it isn’t. The Passport is a spacious and comfortable five-seat cruiser with off-road ability that’s much more than an afterthought.
