How's This Work? Spoilers

What is a Rear Spoiler?

The subject of this week’s How’s This Work might seem a little strange, as it isn’t normally considered a feature but rather just an added design cue. But in reality, Rear Spoilers are much more than just a vehicular fashion statement. We thought we’d dive right into what they are and how they benefit performance so you know why vehicles like the new Civic Type R are equipped with them.

How do rear spoilers work?

Obviously, there is an undeniable boost to aesthetics. Many people associate the rear spoiler with performance vehicles (for good reason) and might think it is something that makes these sports cars look even cooler. Especially considering some of them can get quite large, like the massive rear wing of the classic Plymouth Superbird. But in reality, there is much more to them than simply being a visual enhancement.

Outside of aesthetics, the main advantage of a rear spoiler is improved aerodynamics. The inventor who first came up with the rear spoiler was looking for a way to get rid of the negative movement of air around the vehicle. The faster a vehicle goes, the more air can begin to effect a vehicle negatively. Because of this, that inventor wanted to find a way to “spoil” the negative air movement – hence, spoilers.

So, even though some rear spoilers can get a little ridiculous and overstated, there is always a reason for it – whether the driver realized it when he added it or not. If you’re looking to soup up your performance car and it doesn’t have a rear spoiler, that might be a good place to start. If you’re curious as to which of our Honda vehicles come equipped with a rear spoiler of their own, feel free to give us a call and we’ll help you out.
