How's This Work? Dual Exhaust

What is Dual Exhaust?

With so many of the new vehicles on the Honda lineup being sports cars, or sportier versions of other vehicles, we thought we’d look at a staple of performance vehicles in this week’s How’s This Work: Dual Exhaust. Plenty of sports cars and performance cars around the market come equipped with dual exhaust, and many people might think it’s just because it looks cooler, looks sportier. But there is actually a performance advantage to having dual exhaust on your vehicle, so we thought we’d tell you what that advantage is.

How does Dual Exhaust work?

For starters, we should probably tell you what a regular exhaust system does. The exhaust system, depending on the vehicle, can be made up of a cylinder head, an exhaust manifold, a turbocharger to increase power, a catalytic converter to reduce air pollution and a muffler to reduce produced sound. Not every exhaust system has every part, but whichever parts the exhaust system includes, it becomes a system of piping that takes exhaust gas from the engine and redirects it out a pipe on your vehicle’s rear end.

Dual exhaust essentially doubles the exhaust system. They’re usually identical, but there is one on each side of the vehicle instead of a just a single system. The more horsepower your vehicle has, the more air moves through your powertrain, creating more and more exhaust gasses. Adding another exhaust system means you’re going to get all of those extra gasses out of the engine even faster, thus increasing performance. You might not see a huge difference, but this slight improvement mixed with all of the other performance upgrades found in sports cars like these add up to create a huge advantage.

If you’d like to know which vehicles besides the 2017 Honda Civic Coupe come equipped with a dual-exhaust system, feel free to give us a call here at the sales desk.
