Honda is one automaker that is constantly striving to offer state-of-the-art technology throughout its lineup. The Honda Sensing suite of driver assistance features and HondaLink Next Generation are a just a few pieces of technology available in many Honda vehicles. Another great feature available in select Honda models is Smart Entry, or proximity key entry, with push-button start. This feature brings a whole new level of convenience to your Honda when it comes to locking and unlocking the car doors, using the trunk, and starting and stopping your car. So, what is Honda Smart Entry, exactly? We'll go over this great feature and explain how it works so you can understand the benefits of Smart Entry and know how to use it on equipped models.
The Smart Entry key is the heart of this feature and you should have it with you any time you are around your vehicle. The key works with the system through radio signals, so you don't actually have to take out the key to lock or unlock the doors, start or stop the engine, or open the trunk. When you have the Smart Key within one metre of the vehicle, you can open the locked doors by touching the inside of the door handle and lock the doors by pushing the button the outside of the door handle.
Similarly, just have the Smart Key with you and you can turn on the engine or stop the engine by using the push-button start/stop button. This button also functions to only turn on the electrical components of the car. You can even use the trunk as long as the Smart Key is near the vehicle. The video below goes into greater detail about how this all works.
The Smart Entry system is also designed to keep you from locking your key in the car or the trunk. The car doors will not lock if the system senses the key is inside the car. The trunk will also not close if the system senses the key is inside and it will even sound an alarm to alert the driver. The system is even smart enough to alert you if the car is left running after you exit by sounding an alarm.
The Smart Key also has a trunk button and lock and unlock buttons right on the key if you prefer to use those. If for some reason the battery in the Smart Key dies, there is also an emergency backup key inside that can be taken out to get into the vehicle. Due to the way it is designed, you also can still use the push-button start even if the battery in the Smart Key dies.
Honda Smart Entry is available on select trim levels of Honda models like the Fit, Accord, CR-V, and Pilot.
