What is the Lane Keeping Assist System?

What is the Lane Keeping Assist System?

A few days ago we took a broader look at the Honda Sensing Safety Suite as it is found in the 2016 Pilot, and while we’ve already taken an in-depth look at most of those features there were a couple that we haven’t yet. So for this week’s special feature, we’re going to take a closer look at the Honda Lane Keeping Assist System and how exactly it works. While they wound similar, it is quite different than Lane Departure Warning, though the two work somewhat hand in hand.

How does LKAS work?

If you’ve been keeping up with our special feature blogs, then you probably already know how the Lane Departure Warning system works. If the LDW system senses that you’re drifting over the detected lane lines, it will issue a visual and/or audible alert to warn you of the situation. The Lane Keeping Assist System, or LKAS for short, will pick up if you don’t heed the warnings. If you don’t return to the center of your lane when the warnings sound, then LKAS will take over and gently steer you back into place.

If the system takes over when you don’t want it to, you can simply pull the wheel and the Lane Keeping Assist System will disengage and let you do your thing. It’s important to remember that this feature will not work 100% of the time. For instance, if there are no lane markers – or even if they’re just faded or broken up – the system may not be able to sense that they’re there at all. Additionally, if the cameras on your vehicle are covered with snow or any other obstruction, they won’t be able to sense anything either.

The moral of the story is, the Lane Keeping Assist System is a great technology that can help prevent crashes, but – as per usual – it is no substitute for your attentiveness and best judgment. If you’re interested in finding out which Honda vehicles have LKAS installed or available, then don’t hesitate to stop in, give us a call or just schedule a test drive right here on our website.
